CHAPTER Seventeen
Lizzieâs back locked. Blood was thundering around her body with such force that her head was beginning to ache. The abused coffee cup was still in her right hand, squashed to such an extent it had now become a simple, soggy square of cardboard.
Tyrone wasnât looking at her.
It hadnât been a mistake. She had deliberately not been called into this meeting and Tyrone had looked extremely awkward when she had entered the room. His eyes had flitted to Neil in a panic. Lizzie had known that look.
Their scenic supervisor, Jayden Turin, had broken his leg. Tyrone had decided to take the issue into his own hands and find a replacement.
No one had informed Lizzie.
No one had informed Lizzie because Tyrone already had a pretty good idea who might be available for the job.
âHe was the only Scenic Supervisor available,â Tyrone said, looking tired.
Lizzie didnât feel an ounce of sympathy. She just felt angry and terrified, her stomach clenching hard at every thought of him.
âHeâs a carpenter.â
âWas. He was a carpenter. Recently promoted so thatâs why heâs free.â
âThatâs what he says.â
âI tried everyone.â
âWhy didnât you ask me to sort it?â
âBecause I knew if every single person on this planet was busy you still wouldnât call him, you wouldnât even consider him and we need him.â
She shook her head. âPromote someone else already on the team.â
âNo.â Tyrone sighed heavily. âSee, I knew youâd act like this. This was why I just wanted Neil in this meeting. So we could discuss this like adults and sort out a way to do this so that you wouldnât have to know.â
The barb stung.
âThis was the only option,â Tyrone finished.
âBut it wasnât. If you had let me do my job this wouldnât have been an option.â
âYes, and instead youâd be even more stressed, fretting over finding someone. This is the better solution.â
Neil cleared his throat. âWith all due respect, Tyrone, Lizzieâs already been forced to work with one individual on her Banned List-â
âI am well aware of that.â He laughed, looking at Neil as if expecting him to laugh with him. âShe hardly made it easy for us, did she?â
Neil said nothing. He simply looked as if he were curiously inspecting Tyroneâs face, finding it suddenly fascinating. There was something unnerving and serial killer about that look.
âI canât work with Craig,â Lizzie said, firmly.
âYou said the same thing about Charles.â
âThat doesnât matter, I wonât work with Craig.â
âNeil will deal with the finance side of things, the correspondence, any issues like that, and you can pretend your dad isnât even here.â
But he would be there. The man she hated most in the world would be in her studios, in her space, in the place she had worked so hard to build herself up within.
And he would be working with Charles.
âHe said he would be happy to put the past behind him.â
Rage reared inside her chest. âOf course he did! He has nothing to put behind him! He was the problem!â
âThere are two sides to every story.â
She stared at him and felt something crack ever so slightly inside of her.
