CHAPTER Seventeen

Lizzie’s back locked. Blood was thundering around her body with such force that her head was beginning to ache. The abused coffee cup was still in her right hand, squashed to such an extent it had now become a simple, soggy square of cardboard.

Tyrone wasn’t looking at her.

It hadn’t been a mistake. She had deliberately not been called into this meeting and Tyrone had looked extremely awkward when she had entered the room. His eyes had flitted to Neil in a panic. Lizzie had known that look.

Their scenic supervisor, Jayden Turin, had broken his leg. Tyrone had decided to take the issue into his own hands and find a replacement.

No one had informed Lizzie.

No one had informed Lizzie because Tyrone already had a pretty good idea who might be available for the job.

“He was the only Scenic Supervisor available,” Tyrone said, looking tired.

Lizzie didn’t feel an ounce of sympathy. She just felt angry and terrified, her stomach clenching hard at every thought of him.

“He’s a carpenter.”

“Was. He was a carpenter. Recently promoted so that’s why he’s free.”

“That’s what he says.”

“I tried everyone.”

“Why didn’t you ask me to sort it?”

“Because I knew if every single person on this planet was busy you still wouldn’t call him, you wouldn’t even consider him and we need him.”

She shook her head. “Promote someone else already on the team.”

“No.” Tyrone sighed heavily. “See, I knew you’d act like this. This was why I just wanted Neil in this meeting. So we could discuss this like adults and sort out a way to do this so that you wouldn’t have to know.”

The barb stung.

“This was the only option,” Tyrone finished.

“But it wasn’t. If you had let me do my job this wouldn’t have been an option.”

“Yes, and instead you’d be even more stressed, fretting over finding someone. This is the better solution.”

Neil cleared his throat. “With all due respect, Tyrone, Lizzie’s already been forced to work with one individual on her Banned List-”

“I am well aware of that.” He laughed, looking at Neil as if expecting him to laugh with him. “She hardly made it easy for us, did she?”

Neil said nothing. He simply looked as if he were curiously inspecting Tyrone’s face, finding it suddenly fascinating. There was something unnerving and serial killer about that look.

“I can’t work with Craig,” Lizzie said, firmly.

“You said the same thing about Charles.”

“That doesn’t matter, I won’t work with Craig.”

“Neil will deal with the finance side of things, the correspondence, any issues like that, and you can pretend your dad isn’t even here.”

But he would be there. The man she hated most in the world would be in her studios, in her space, in the place she had worked so hard to build herself up within.

And he would be working with Charles.

“He said he would be happy to put the past behind him.”

Rage reared inside her chest. “Of course he did! He has nothing to put behind him! He was the problem!”

“There are two sides to every story.”

She stared at him and felt something crack ever so slightly inside of her.
